Intubation, sometimes entubation,[1] commonly refers to tracheal intubation, which is the medical term for insertion of a tube into the trachea, usually in the setting of anesthesia or ventilation in critically ill patients.

Other usage of the term includes introduction of a tube into the gastrointestinal tract, e.g. balloon tamponade with a Sengstaken-Blakemore tube.
